Youth Service Projects

The Rotary Club of Coronado conducts service projects across Rotary International's Five Avenues of Service: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, Youth Service, and International Service. We are able to finance our service projects with the following fundraising activities:

  1. Member Pledges
  2. Jim Laslavic Charity Golf Tournament
  3. Low Tide Ride & Stride
  4. Polio Plus Wine Tasting

Youth Service refers to the youngest generation in the family of Rotary. Many are participants in Rotary's youth and young adult programs such as those listed below. Bringing these programs to fruition would not be possible without the efforts of many dedicated Rotarians.

Athletic Awards
Each year our club invites the top student-athletes at Coronado High School to join us for lunch and receive awards for not only their athletic prowess, but for their contributions to our community and their outstanding grades.

High School Scholarships
Each year, a senior boy and girl graduating from Coronado High School are awarded the prestigious Rotary "Service Above Self" $5,000 Scholarship in honor of long-time Rotarian Dr. Jim Vernetti based upon criteria established by our club.
Everyone a Reader
This project provides funding for books for elementary school children to read, and volunteers to either read to them or assist them with their own reading skills.
RYLA
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a Rotary International program that takes top student leaders and gives them the opportunity to experience fellowship with other top students from around the San Diego County region in a retreat environment. Our club normally selects five students from Coronado High School to attend this prestigious program.
Rotaract and Interact
Rotoract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they are sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. All Rotaract efforts begin at the local, grassroots level, with members addressing their community's physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. The Coronado Rotary Club supports both Rotaract and Interact.

LEAD
The LEAD (Leadership, Ethics and Determination) Conference is a leadership and personal development program for 8th grade middle school students. Talented young people attend a two-day camp developed and presented by the Rotarians of Rotary International District 5340.
Model UN
The Model United Nations is a reproduction of the United Nations General Assembly. A number of nations that have representation in the UN are each represented by a delegation of two students. These High School students are selected, sponsored supported and advised by participating Rotary Clubs in District 5340. The advisor attends the Conference and may be a Rotarian, a teacher, or other interested member of the community.
Four-way Test Speech Contest
Encourages high school students to prepare and give speeches that apply the Four-Way Test to everyday activities and issues.

 YMCA Camp Surf
We sponsor camper scholarships for children whose families otherwise would not be able to afford this amazing opportunity by the sea. We are also sponsoring a beautiful, newly built cabin for overnight campers, "The Rotary Club of Coronado Cabin."

Rotary Youth Exchange
This program encompasses three types of exchanges that our Rotary club sponsors: 1. Long-term exchange for ages 15 1/2 to 18, providing students with the opportunity to spend a full academic year with several host families and becoming completely immersed in the country's language and culture. 2. Short-term exchange for ages 15-18, where students have the opportunity to stay for several weeks abroad with a host family with a teenager of similar age and then he/she will come to the student's home in the US and stay for several weeks. 3. Summer Camp exchange; where over 60 international youth summer camps are offered to students 15 1/2 to 25 who want to be the only American in a group of students from other countries, spending 2 to 3 weeks abroad.

 Student Rotarian Program

Each month during the school year, a deserving high school senior is selected to be our Student Rotarian of the Month. They attend two weekly Rotary meetings at the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado where they learn what Rotary is all about. Their month is culminated with a brief "Who Am I" speech during which they get to honor a favorite teacher, administrator, coach, etc. who has influenced them positively.
