The
Rotary Club of Coronado is either currently engaged in the projects
or fund-raisers noted below, has been involved in them recently,
or will be developing them in the future.
Pancake
Breakfast
Held annually since 1964, this program brings Coronado Rotarians
together with their families, friends, and neighbors to enjoy good
food and fellowship on the CityÕs Flower Show Weekend.
Low
Tide Ride and Stride
Started in 1998, this event, through the cooperation of the US Navy,
the City of Coronado and the California State Parks Department provides
participants the opportunity to ride their own bikes or rental ones
or run or walk approximately 8 miles from Imperial Beach to Coronado
along the Pacific Ocean upon a compacted beach at low tide.
Golf
Tournament
This event was developed in 1998 specifically to provide funding
for number of projects, one of them specifically being Camp Able,
which will be covered in more detail under Projects. This tournament
is played on the beautiful Coronado Municipal Golf Course located
adjacent to Glorietta Bay with stunning views of the Coronado Bridge.
There
are four Avenues of Service in Rotary and the breakdown of projects
for each Avenue is listed below.

Substance
Abuse Programs
Rotary provides financial support and volunteers for various abuse
programs in the community directed at helping young people make
the right choices in their lives.
Athletic
Awards
Once a year our Club invites the top student-athletes at Coronado
High School to join us for lunch and receive awards for not only
their athletic prowess, but for their contributions to our community
and their outstanding grades.
Beach
Cleanup
Once a month our members scour different sections of our beautiful
beaches to preserve one of most precious natural resources.
Christmas
Visits
On Christmas Eve, one of our members dresses up as Santa and along
with other volunteers, delivers gifts and goodwill to our seniors
at the local retirement facility.
Christmas
Eve Santas
On Christmas Eve, 15 Rotarians dress up as Santa Claus, and in conjunction
with the Coronado Fire Department, deliver gifts to local children.
Parents taking advantage of this program are asked to provide an
unwrapped gift for children who otherwise might not enjoy the Christmas
holidays.
High
School Scholarships
Each year, a Senior boy and girl graduating from
Coronado High School are each awarded a $2,500 scholarship based
upon criteria established by the school.
Tree
Planting
Once a year our members join with a local organization to plant
trees in our community.
Health
Issues
Each year our Club assists either with financial support or volunteers
or both in providing prostate screenings, stroke clinics and breast
cancer workshops.

Scouting
With our annual funding, we help to maintain camping facilities
for the Boy and Girl Scout programs in the San Diego and Imperial
County region.
Food
for The Needy
In October, we provide funding to purchase food to feed some three
hundred homeless people and the volunteers to serve them.
Camp
Able
One of the direct beneficiaries of the golf tournament mentioned
above is the camp. Camp Able provides water-oriented activities
for over 800 children with mental or physical disabilities over
a seven-week period during the summer with Rotary funding one of
those weeks.
Ione
Harter Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp
This camp is held each June to provide tennis instruction to children
between the ages of 8 and 17 who, due to physical disabilities,
must use a wheelchair. It is operated by a Rotarian and his wheelchair
athlete brother and is staffed by Rotarian volunteers, some of whom
are terrific tennis players who actually get into chairs themselves
to compete with the kids.
Relay
For Life
This is a relatively new event to Coronado and it is sponsored by
the American Cancer Society. Our Rotary Club has become one of the
major financial sponsors, and it fields a strong contingent of members
who participate in this 24 hour walk-a-thon that in 2000 raised
over $100,000

Career
Day
Each Fall, 70 to 80 of our members participate in this program at
Coronado High School. These members spend time with the students,
explaining their professions and responding to their questions in
order to provide our students with a better understanding of what
the real work world is like.
Four
Way Test Speech Contest
Rotary has developed a code of conduct that guides all of us in
our daily lives. It is called the Four Way Test and it is:
Is
it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Once
a year our Club sponsors a speech contest based upon this test.
The five finalists then deliver their speeches to us at one of our
lunches. A winner is selected, awarded a monetary prize, and has
the opportunity to continue to compete at the District and even
National level.
Everyone A Reader
This is a program that provides both books for children
to read and volunteers to either read to them or assist them with
their own reading skills. We present our weekly speakers with an
approved book for them to sign, which we then donate to the program.
This accounts for over fifty books per year getting into the program.
Numerous Rotarians also volunteer as Readers.
Good
Egg Award
Once a quarter a Rotarian selection committee chooses a non-Rotarian
community volunteer who provides unselfish service to our community.
Senior
Fair
Every two years our Club sponsors this event to provide seniors
with the opportunity to discover goods and services available to
them that can assist them with special needs that develop as they
age.
Summer
Jobs Fair
Once a year, Coronado Rotary works with the Coronado Chamber of
Commerce to put on this jobs fair so that local employers can provide
information to our high-schoolers about job opportunities right
in their own community.

RYLA
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a Rotary International program
that takes top student leaders and gives them the opportunity to
experience fellowship with other top students from around the San
Diego County region in a retreat environment. Our Club normally
selects five students from Coronado High School to attend this prestigious
program.

Ambassadorial
Scholarships
This program, supported by our Club, is the largest foreign study
program in the world. Its purpose is to further world peace and
understanding among peoples and nations by sending outstanding scholars
to countries the world over to live and interrelate with the citizenry
of those countries, thereby fostering better human and personal
relationships. The awards can reach as high as $25,000, including
airfare for a year of study in a foreign country.
Group
Study Exchange
This program, again supported by our Club, is an international exchange
program involving teams of business and professional persons visiting
and living with Rotarians in other countries to learn about their
customs, culture, living and business practices.
Limbs of Freedom
This project was held in cooperation with an all-womenÕs Rotary
Club in Ensenada, Mexico. Upon completion of the first camp, over
180 Mexican citizens were provided with 220 prosthetic devices that
assisted them in actually standing and walking unassisted.
PanAmerican
Institute
This is a school in Tijuana, Mexico. For years the
wife of one of our past club presidents and district governors has
worked tirelessly to provide the students there with a library.
Another member assists in providing food baskets during the holidays.
This same member has gotten other clubs and our district to supply
computers to this school. Recently, another member provided the
funding to allow all of the schoolÕs computers to have unrestricted
access to the Internet.

Polio
Plus
This is a Rotary International project whose objective is to eradicate
polio from the planet by its centennial in 2005. In 1988, our club
provided $88,000 towards this goal, and continues to support this
project today.
Rotary
Youth Exchange
This program provides both long and short-term programs for children
between the ages of 15 and 18. The short-term program gives boys
and girls the opportunity to spend 3 to 8 weeks abroad living with
a family and host brother or sister. The long-term program provides
children with the chance to spend a full academic year in the country
of their choice, living with a family, learning the different customs
and absorbing a different culture.
Thousand
Smiles
This project has been a continuing program of our club since 1986.
One of our members collects a dollar from each of our members at
our weekly lunches if they forgot to wear their Rotary pin or need
to leave the meeting early. These dollars are used to provide funding
to support the great work of many Rotarian volunteers who travel
to Mexico to do surgery to correct severe facial disfigurement.

Operations
This area of Club Service provides for the operational support of
the ClubÕs fund-raisers and numerous projects.
Charger
Game
An opportunity for Club members to gather together for a Monday
Night Football game in which the local team is a contestant.
Christmas
Party
A more formal luncheon where Rotarians and their familiesenjoy
a terrific meal at the Hotel del Coronado, and fantastic entertainment
provided by our local LambÕs Players. Santa drops by to deliver
gifts to our children and grandchildren.
Concert
In The Park
One Sunday afternoon in the summer, our Club turns out in force
for one of our seasonal concerts in Spreckels Park.
Flags
On The Avenue
Coronado Rotary places 180 American flags in the Orange Avenue median
on every major American holiday.
Military
Holiday Guests With Coronado serving as a major US Naval Base, there are a number
of lonely sailors and their families who have nowhere to go on Thanksgiving
and Christmas. Our club members open their homes and hearts to those
individuals during those holidays in an attempt to thank them for
their service to this great country.
Day
At The Races
One a year our Club members gather at the Del Mar Racetrack to share
the excitement of the races and fellowship with each other.
Octoberfest
Family Picnic
What started out as a fund-raiser has now turned into our annual
family picnic. Great food, great games and the bright California
sun add up to another great experience for our members and their
families.
Padre
Game
A reserved skybox at Petco Park provides an incredible venue for our members to
attend one of the home games of the San Diego Padres.
